Curb Appeal on a Budget: How We Gave Our Home a Total Exterior Makeover
Have you ever looked at your house and thought, This place has potential… but it needs help? That was us. The structure was solid, but the style? Not so much. With a shoestring budget and a big vision, we decided to tackle the exterior head-on—and the results speak for themselves.
Take a look at our before-and-after transformation!
Before: A Blank Canvas
Our home originally had plain white siding, dated black-trimmed windows, bare gutters, and a patchy lawn with zero landscaping. It was clean, but lacked personality and curb appeal. We knew we didn’t need a complete renovation—we just needed some smart, affordable updates.
After: A Warm, Welcoming Facelift
Just look at the difference:
Here’s What We Did (on a Budget!):
- Painted the Siding a Bold New Color
We ditched the dull white for a rich navy blue with gray undertones. It gave the home instant character and contrast while still looking timeless. We used a high-quality exterior paint and put in the work ourselves to get professional-looking results for a fraction of the cost.
Total cost: ~$200-250 (paint, paint brushes and pans, masking materials)
- Spray-Painted the Gutters Copper
Instead of replacing our old gutters with real copper, we got the look for less using copper metallic spray paint. The warm tone pops against the dark siding and adds a luxe touch that feels intentional and custom.
Total cost: ~$30–$40 (4–5 cans of high-quality spray paint)
- Revamped the Landscaping
We created simple flower beds bordered with brick-colored landscaping stones and filled them with river rock for added color. We planted low-maintenance greenery and added symmetrical hanging ferns to balance the front of the house. A few potted flowers on the steps and a flag on the column finished the cozy, welcoming feel.
Total cost: ~$300-400 (plants, rock, sand, planters, stone edging)
- Added Finishing Touches
We cleaned up the front door, added a cute planter we found at a garage sale, a small repurposed bench for seasonal décor, and added a cute welcome sign hanging from the door. We usually swap these out with the season as well. These little details helped tie everything together.
Total cost: ~$20
The Result:
Now, our home feels like us. Warm, inviting, and full of charm—without breaking the bank. We didn’t need new siding or expensive landscaping; we just needed a plan, a few weekends of work, and some creativity.
Tips for Your Own Budget Makeover:
- Prioritize paint. It’s the biggest bang-for-your-buck update.
- Don’t underestimate spray paint. From gutters to planters, it goes a long way.
- Use symmetry. Even a simple landscape design looks polished when it’s balanced.
- Focus on the entry. A clean porch with thoughtful details makes a huge impact.
